Teledyne FLIR VUE TZ20-R gets price drop

Good news if you’re in the market for a thermal camera. The VUE TZ20-R dual thermal zoom drone payload from Teledyne FLIR just got a price reduction.

The VUE TZ20-R, which was built for the DJI Matrice 200 Series and Matrice 300, now goes for just $6,500. That’s an $1,000 price reduction from the initially-advertised price of $7,500.

Made in the U.S., this payload combines temperature measurement with 20x thermal zoom. In theory, it can improve flight time efficiency and allow drone pilots to inspect more area in less time — and with greater accuracy, generating 4x as many pixels on target at every zoom level versus competing, single-thermal camera payloads.

The Radiometric Vue TZ20-R, which launched in September 2021, is a high-resolution radiometric gimbal payload with pixel-by-pixel temperature measurement and up to 20 times digital zoom. It’s set to be an ideal addition to toolkits for pilots seeking even greater situational awareness, accuracy, and context, such as drone pilots working in the utility, roofing, solar and other industrial inspectors as well as emergency response pilots in search and rescue, law enforcement, firefighting, and public safety.

Here are some of its most noteworthy specs:

  • Radiometry to measure the temperature of every pixel in the scene
  • Two 640×512 resolution FLIR Boson thermal camera modules, with one providing a narrow-field-of-view (18 degrees) and the other a wide-field-of-view (95 degrees)
  • Thermal zoom performance at five times, 10 times, and 20 times digital zoom
  • IP44-rated to provide operability in poor weather conditions

The news about the VUE TZ20-R price drop comes just about in line with news of a brand new DJI enterprise drone, the DJI Matrice 30. That small yet enterprise-minded drone supports the all-new Zenmuse H20N sensor, which combines a starlight-grade night vision camera with a hybrid zoom thermal imaging camera and a laser rangefinder. The Matrice 30 is available either as the base level DJI M30 or the slightly upgraded M30T1, which targets thermal use cases.
